The Edge of Art

"Tana Bana"

We built this frame for a woven paper carpet by artist Ghulam Mohammad entitled "Tana Bana" (Fidget), 2019.  The 14' long, extremely delicate artwork required a frame that was sleek and simple, sufficiently deep, strong enough to hold its own weight, and sturdy enough to hold itself square.

We designed, built, and painted a custom frame, including supports on the back of the frame to keep it square and sturdy, and thin supports on the front to add architectural details and prevent warping. Fully-reversible, conservation-grade hinging techniques were used to affix the carpet to the acid-free backing board, which prevents the carpet from sagging, tearing, or becoming unwoven as it hangs in an upright orientation. After consultation with our client and the artist, we decided to fit the art slightly away from the UV-protective acrylic in order to highlight the delicate texture of the woven paper carpet, particularly the curled fringes.

The Gilded Lily

This beautiful, hand-carved Florentine frame was hanging in a prominent downtown Indianapolis home when the hanging wire broke and the frame fell to the floor, breaking into hundreds of pieces.

Anatoly and his team collected and reattached the salvageable parts and pieces. For parts that were not recoverable, new pieces were re-carved by hand. Once the structure was restored, structure, 23k gold leaf was applied in the traditional gilding process over the frame's entire surface.

Petrov Frame Atelier is one of the few places in the country able to take on a restoration project of this scale and complexity. Stop by our shop to see this restored beauty!

Fred's Frames

Our customer Fred came to us with some beautiful wood and some creative, bold ideas for frames. We worked in partnership with him to build frames for some pieces of original art and to bring his vision to life.

This was an inspiring project, and we would love to work with you to bring your creative ideas to life.

The first frame pictured is a pyramid-style frame. The next frame pictured features floral decorations in tempera with gold moonbeams and is finished in high-gloss.

Heirloom Sailboat

A customer brought in this wonderful sailboat painting that had hung in his grandparents' house for decades. He was originally only seeking a basic cleaning and restoration, and but seeing the finished result, he asked us to make some high-quality prints of the painting so that he could gift copies to his siblings. We were able to make prints of the painting that captured the textures and color of the original painting beautifully.
